Is XL bully banned in Ireland? ›

Currently no dog breed is banned in Ireland - unlike in Britain - where it is a criminal offence to own an XL bully unless the owner has a valid exemption certificate. However, there are a number of breeds in Ireland, XL bullies among them, that are restricted.

It is now illegal to own an American Bully XL dog in England and Wales, unless you have an exemption. From 31 July 2024, American Bully XL dogs will also be banned in Scotland. We have a programme of practical support, which includes muzzle training, and advice to help dog owners understand the ban.

They were originally created as a “family companion” and are a combination of American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Olde English Bulldog, and Bulldog. You can now also find American Bullies in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.

However, there are actually many differences between these two breeds. American Bullies are a newer breed that was developed in the United States in the 1990s. They are a mix of several different breeds, including Pitbulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, and English Bull Terriers.

In 2023 XL Bullies made up less than 1% of Britain's dog population and yet, according to Bully Watch UK, the dogs were responsible for 44% of dog attacks on people. They estimate the breed is 270 times more deadly than all other dog breeds combined. Their ancestry helps explain their aggression.

American Bully, breed of muscular companion dog (in contrast to a working dog) created in the United States in the 1980s and '90s. With proper training and care, it can often be an excellent family dog.

What is the difference between American Bully and XL bully? ›

The XL Bully breed type is a variant of the wider American Bully breed type. The XL Bully breed type is typically larger (both in terms of height and body shape) and more muscular than other American Bully breed types such as the 'Micro', 'Pocket', 'Standard' and 'Classic'.

Strict rules about ownership of American XL bully dogs are in force in England, Wales and Scotland. They will be introduced in Northern Ireland later in 2024. However, there have been a number of attacks involving the dogs, some fatal, since the laws were put in place.

The Government have announced early details of a two-stage approach to the XL Bully ban in Scotland. From 23 February 2024, it will remain legal to own an XL Bully type dog, but all dogs must wear a muzzle and a lead when in public. From this date, it will be illegal to sell, gift, abandon or exchange XL Bully dogs.

Yet in Spain, the American Bully XL is not classified as a potentially dangerous dog, unlike its parent breeds, including the Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and American Staffordshire Terrier. Puppies of this breed can even sell for over €1,000 in Spain.

Owners who wish to keep their dogs must apply to an exemption scheme or they can choose to have their dog euthanised and apply for compensation. It will be illegal to own an XL bully from February 1 2024 unless the animal is on an exempt list, called the Index of Exempted Dogs.
